Canadian passport and PR photo size rules
Canada is stricter about photos than many countries, and a rejected photo can delay a passport or permanent resident card by weeks. According to the Government of Canada, a printed passport photo must be 50 mm wide by 70 mm high (2 × 2¾ inches), and the face must measure 31 mm to 36 mm from chin to crown — the crown being the top of the head, not the top of the hair. Printed PR card photos use the same 50 × 70 mm size and face height.

Other requirements are the same across photo types: a plain white or light, untextured background; a neutral expression with your mouth closed and eyes open; even lighting with no shadows or glare; and your head and shoulders centred and facing the camera. Passport photos must have been taken within the last six months, and PR card photos within the last twelve.
How to use the Canada photo resizer
- Take a well-lit photo against a plain white wall, with the camera at eye level about 1.5 m away.

- Drag the photo so the top of your head touches the red crown line.
- Zoom until your chin sits inside the green band — that band is the allowed 31–36 mm range.
- Use “Straighten” if your head is slightly tilted, and keep your nose on the dashed centre line.
- Click “Create photo”, check the preview, and download the JPG or a 4×6 print sheet.
High-resolution output
The print preset exports at 600 DPI (1181 × 1654 pixels) by default, or 300 DPI (591 × 827 pixels) if you prefer a smaller file, and the resolution is written into the JPEG so photo labs print it at exactly 50 × 70 mm. The 4×6 print sheet fits four copies on a standard 4 × 6 inch print with light cut lines.
Important: who can take your photo
For printed passport and PR card photos, the Government of Canada requires a commercial photographer, who adds their name, address and the date to the back. For the passport online renewal service, IRCC asks for the original file straight from the camera without edits, so check the current instructions before using a cropped image. This tool is ideal for digital PR card uploads, for checking framing, and for preparing files for a print shop — but it never replaces the official rules for your specific application.

No. It only crops, scales and straightens your photo. IRCC doesn't allow photos altered with editing tools or filters, so take the photo against a plain white or light background to begin with.
