How sales tax works in Canada
Canada has three kinds of sales tax, and which ones you pay depends on the province or territory where the purchase is made. The GST (goods and services tax) is a 5% federal tax charged everywhere. Five provinces have merged their provincial tax with the GST into a single HST (harmonized sales tax). Four provinces charge their own PST on top of the GST — called QST in Quebec and RST in Manitoba. Alberta and the three territories charge only the GST.
| Province / territory | Tax type | Combined rate |
|---|---|---|
| Alberta | GST 5% | 5% |
| British Columbia | GST 5% + PST 7% | 12% |
| Manitoba | GST 5% + RST 7% | 12% |
| New Brunswick | HST 15% | 15% |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | HST 15% | 15% |
| Nova Scotia | HST 14% | 14% |
| Northwest Territories | GST 5% | 5% |
| Nunavut | GST 5% | 5% |
| Ontario | HST 13% | 13% |
| Prince Edward Island | HST 15% | 15% |
| Quebec | GST 5% + QST 9.975% | 14.975% |
| Saskatchewan | GST 5% + PST 6% | 11% |
| Yukon | GST 5% | 5% |
The most recent change was in Nova Scotia, where the HST dropped from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025. Rates are taken from the Canada Revenue Agency’s GST/HST rate table and provincial finance ministries.
How to use the calculator
- Pick a mode: “Add tax to a price” if you know the pre-tax amount, or “Remove tax from a total” if you have a receipt total.
- Enter the amount in Canadian dollars.
- Select the province or territory where the sale takes place.
- Read the pre-tax amount, each tax separately, and the total.
- Scroll down to compare the same amount across every province.
The formulas
Adding tax: tax = price × rate, and total = price + tax. For $250 in British Columbia, GST is $250 × 5% = $12.50 and PST is $250 × 7% = $17.50, for a total of $280.
Removing tax (reverse calculation): price before tax = total ÷ (1 + combined rate). A $339 receipt from Ontario contains $339 ÷ 1.13 = $300 before tax and $39 of HST. You can’t simply take 13% of the total — that would give $44.07, which is too much, because the tax was calculated on the smaller pre-tax price.
In Quebec, the QST has been charged on the price before GST since 2013, so the two taxes simply add up to 14.975%. Prince Edward Island likewise switched to a single HST in 2013, so there’s no “tax on tax” anywhere in Canada today.
Which province’s tax should a business charge?
For GST/HST registrants, the general rule is to charge the rate of the province where the customer receives the goods or services — so an Alberta business shipping to Toronto usually charges 13% HST. Provincial sales taxes have their own registration and collection rules. Small suppliers with taxable sales under CRA’s threshold don’t have to register for GST/HST at all. If you bill clients, our free invoice generator applies these rates automatically. Buying a home? Sales tax isn’t charged on most resale homes, but you’ll pay land transfer tax — see the Land Transfer Tax Calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is the sales tax rate in each Canadian province?
Alberta and the territories charge only the 5% GST. Ontario has 13% HST; New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island have 15% HST; and Nova Scotia has 14% HST since April 1, 2025. British Columbia (7% PST), Manitoba (7% RST), Saskatchewan (6% PST) and Quebec (9.975% QST) charge a provincial tax on top of 5% GST.
How do I calculate HST backwards from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. For example, in Ontario a $113 total includes $100 before tax: 113 ÷ 1.13 = 100, so the HST is $13. Choose 'Remove tax from a total' and the calculator does this for you.
What's the difference between GST, HST and PST?
GST is the 5% federal goods and services tax. PST is a separate provincial sales tax charged in some provinces. HST is a single harmonized tax that combines the GST and provincial portion in participating provinces.
Is QST charged on top of GST in Quebec?
No. Since 2013, Quebec's 9.975% QST is calculated on the price before GST, not on the GST-included amount. The combined rate is therefore 14.975%.
Does every product have sales tax in Canada?
No. Basic groceries, prescription drugs and some medical devices are zero-rated, and many financial and health services are exempt. Provincial sales taxes also have their own exemptions, so the rate shown is the general rate for taxable goods and services.
