What UTM parameters do
When someone clicks a link to your website, analytics tools can often see the referring site — but not which ad, email or post they clicked. UTM parameters fix that. They’re short tags added to the end of a URL, and tools such as Google Analytics read them to attribute each visit to the right source, medium and campaign. With consistent UTM tagging you can compare channels, find the ads that actually drive sales and stop guessing where your traffic comes from.
The UTM parameters explained
- utm_source — where the traffic comes from: google, facebook, linkedin, newsletter.
- utm_medium — the type of channel: cpc, paid_social, email, social, referral, display.
- utm_campaign — the campaign or promotion: spring_sale, black_friday, webinar_march.
- utm_term — the paid search keyword (optional).
- utm_content — which ad or link was clicked when a campaign has several (optional).
- utm_id — a campaign ID, used for importing cost data into analytics (optional).
How to use the single URL builder
- Paste the landing page URL. Existing query parameters and #anchors are kept.
- Pick a preset such as “Facebook Ads” or “Newsletter”, or type the source and medium yourself.
- Enter a campaign name, and optionally term, content and campaign ID.
- Copy the finished link from the green box. Warnings appear if something looks off.
- Save the combination as your own preset to reuse next time.
Bulk tagging from a spreadsheet
For larger launches, switch to Bulk mode. Paste a CSV — or copy cells straight from Excel or Google Sheets — with a header row containing url and the UTM columns you need. Every row is validated and tagged, rows with problems are highlighted, and you can copy all the links or export a CSV that keeps your original columns with a new tagged_url column added.
UTM naming best practices
- Use lowercase everywhere. “Email” and “email” show up as different mediums in reports.
- Pick one separator — underscores or dashes — and stick to it instead of spaces.
- Standardise your source and medium names in a shared list so the whole team tags the same way.
- Never tag internal links on your own site; it overwrites the visitor’s original source.
- Keep campaign names descriptive but short, e.g. product_launch_2026.

Frequently asked questions
What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a URL — such as ?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=spring_sale — that tell analytics tools like Google Analytics where a visitor came from.
Which UTM parameters are required?
Source, medium and campaign should be on every tagged link. Term and content are optional: use term for paid search keywords and content to tell apart ads or links within the same campaign.
Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?
Yes. Analytics treats 'Facebook' and 'facebook' as two different sources, which splits your reports. That's why 'Force lowercase' is on by default.
How do I build UTM links in bulk?
Switch to Bulk mode and paste a CSV or spreadsheet with a url column plus utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign columns. The tool tags every row, flags errors and lets you export the result as a CSV.
Should I use UTM tags on internal links?
No. UTM tags on links within your own site start a new session and overwrite the original source, which makes your data less accurate. Use them only on links from other sites, ads, emails and social posts.
