A free invoice maker for US and Canadian businesses
Freelancers, contractors and small businesses on both sides of the border need invoices that look professional and get the tax right. This free invoice generator lets you bill in US dollars or Canadian dollars, apply US sales tax or the correct Canadian GST, HST, PST or QST for each province, add a discount and your logo, and download a clean PDF — with no account, no watermark and nothing uploaded to a server.
How to create an invoice
- Enter an invoice number and the issue and due dates, and choose USD or CAD.
- Optionally add your logo (PNG or JPG). It is resized in your browser.
- Fill in your business details — including your GST/HST number if you’re registered — and your client’s.
- Add a line for each product or service with a quantity and rate. Amounts are calculated automatically.
- Choose the tax: none, a US sales tax percentage, or a Canadian province.
- Add a percentage or fixed-amount discount and any notes or payment terms.
- Check the live preview, then click “Download PDF”.
Your draft is saved automatically in this browser, so you can close the tab and come back later. It stays on your device only; click “New invoice” to clear it.
How tax is calculated on the invoice
The discount is taken off the subtotal first, and tax is then charged on the discounted amount. For Canada, the tool uses the combined rates currently published by the Canada Revenue Agency:
| Province / territory | Taxes charged |
|---|---|
| Alberta | GST 5% |
| British Columbia | GST 5% + PST 7% |
| Manitoba | GST 5% + RST 7% |
| New Brunswick | HST 15% |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | HST 15% |
| Nova Scotia | HST 14% |
| Northwest Territories | GST 5% |
| Nunavut | GST 5% |
| Ontario | HST 13% |
| Prince Edward Island | HST 15% |
| Quebec | GST 5% + QST 9.975% |
| Saskatchewan | GST 5% + PST 6% |
| Yukon | GST 5% |
Quebec’s QST is calculated on the price before GST, and each tax is shown on its own line so your customer can claim input tax credits. In general, you charge the rate of the province where your customer receives the goods or services, not where your business is located. Not every business must register: small suppliers under CRA’s threshold can choose not to charge GST/HST.
US sales tax is set by states, counties and cities, so there is no single national rate. Enter the combined rate for the buyer’s location. Many services are exempt in some states, and marketplace and remote-seller rules differ — check with the state’s department of revenue if you are unsure.
What to include on every invoice

- Your client’s name and address
- A clear description of each item, with quantity, rate and amount
- Each tax shown separately, and the total in the stated currency
- Payment terms: due date, accepted payment methods and any late fees

Frequently asked questions
Is this invoice generator really free?
Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of invoices. The PDF is created in your browser, so your client and pricing details are never sent to a server.
Which tax should I put on a Canadian invoice?
Registered businesses generally charge GST/HST based on where the customer receives the goods or services. HST provinces (Ontario and the Atlantic provinces) use one combined rate; others charge 5% GST plus provincial sales tax where applicable. Check CRA's place-of-supply rules for your situation.
Do I need a GST/HST number on my invoice?
If you're registered for GST/HST, your customers generally need your registration number on the invoice to claim input tax credits. Enter it in the 'Tax / business number' field.
Where is my draft saved?
The draft is saved in your browser's local storage on this device only. Clearing your browser data removes it, and it isn't synced to other devices. Click 'New invoice' to start over.
How do I charge US sales tax?
Choose 'US sales tax' and enter the combined state and local rate for the buyer's location. Rates vary by state, county and city, and some goods and services are exempt, so check your state's revenue department.
