Counts use visible characters, so an emoji counts as one (except on X, which uses its own weighted count). Platforms occasionally count some characters differently, so leave a little margin near the limit.

Write once, check every platform

Social media managers often adapt the same message for several networks, and each one has its own limit. A post that fits comfortably on LinkedIn can be ten times too long for X, and a YouTube title that looks fine in a draft may be cut off at 100 characters. This counter checks your text against the main limits at the same time, with progress bars that turn amber as you get close and red when you go over.

How to use the character counter

  1. Type or paste your post into the box. Your draft is saved in this browser.
  2. See the total characters, words, hashtags, mentions and lines under the box.
  3. Check each platform’s bar to see how many characters you have left — or how many to cut.
  4. Include or hide long-form limits such as X Premium posts and YouTube descriptions.
  5. Copy the finished text when it fits everywhere you plan to post.

Limits are taken from each platform’s help pages and last checked on 2026-09-27. Instagram’s 2,200-character caption limit is widely reported, but we couldn’t find it stated on an official Instagram page, so it’s marked as unconfirmed.

How X counts characters

X doesn’t simply count letters. According to its developer documentation, every link is shortened with t.co and counts as 23 characters, however long the original URL is. All emoji count as 2, even complex ones like families or flags. Most Latin letters, numbers and punctuation count as 1, while Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2. This tool follows the same rules, so a post with a link and a couple of emoji is measured the way X will measure it.

Tips for posts that perform

  • Front-load the message. Feeds show only the first line or two before “see more”, especially on LinkedIn and Instagram.
  • Leave room on X for people to quote or reply with their own comment.
  • Use a few relevant hashtags rather than a long block of them.
  • Track your links with UTM tags so you know which platform drives visits.

Need images to go with your post? Create every size at once with the Social Media Image Resizer. For longer writing, the Word Counter shows reading time and keyword density, and the UTM Builder tags your links for analytics.
